ART EKKONO

Art and football are often seen as having no connection. We believe in the potential of these two fields to enrich one another and benefit from that relationship. Artists should approach football—to explore and reinterpret it—because it is one of the most important social phenomena of our time.

Likewise, those involved in football (players, coaches, families, club directors, etc.) should engage with the perspectives artists bring to the sport, in order to broaden their outlook, learn from the critiques, and reconsider their behaviors and attitudes.

Joan Miró
This was the official poster of the 82 World Cup organized in Spain entitled "The party". The work uses the most common colors in Miró's artistic work, but with a greater prominence of red and yellow due to their connection to the host country. In the artwork a footballer appears who rises towards the sky to connect with the ball through a header, represented by a red full moon.

Wendy White
This painting is part of the "Sports" series, in which the artist, through football, basketball, skiing or baseball, explores themes such as gender, the purity of physical expression or the fragility and durability of the human condition. Sometimes the works feature a recognizable player, while at other times the work is obscured, resulting in more abstract compositions. All the works seek to establish parallels between athletes and artists, the studio and the playing field.

The headbutt
The headbutt
Adel Abdessemed
In this large bronze statue, five meters high and weighing several tons, the headbutt carried out by the player, of Algerian origin like the creator of the work, Zinedine Zidane, against the Italian Marco Materazzi in the World Cup final in 2006 immortalized. The work is controversial and provokes debate. According to the artist, the statue confronts the tradition of making statues in honor of victories. This is an ode to defeat, that of Zidane and the French team who lost that final. Furthermore, he wanted to show the dark side of the hero and the various expressions of violence in which we participate as an audience.

DJANIRA DA MOTTA E SILVA
Djanira's works feature a vibrant sense of color and her interest in popular themes. An itinerant painter and anthropologist, she was considered a chronicler of customs. She portrayed the daily life of her country through her art, as she represented the common people, the landscapes, work and leisure. As a Brazilian artist aware of her culture, she painted the king sport several times, such as in this work in which she immortalized the match of one of the great classics of Brazilian soccer, Fla x Flu (Flamengo x Fluminense).

This artist is known for her video works through which she makes fun explorations of different topics. Petra, who played soccer for 14 years, is recorded in this video in a bright pink swimsuit, juggling a ball, or rather, an IKEA soccer pillow, which was what she had on hand when the inspiration hit her.

ROBERT DELAUNAY
Delaunay pioneered a type of abstract art called 'Orphism', a new style that explored reality using circular shapes and bright colors. He carried out a series of studies on rhythm and movement, which resulted in paintings based on sporting events, such as this work dedicated to football.

NICOLA CONSTANTINO
These soccer balls are part of the “Human Skin” series, a project in which the artist makes different objects with a fabric that emulates human skin, decorated with silicone male nipples with which she proposes a change of view to permanent sexualization of the female gender. These balls are objects ready to be consumed but made with a material that would escape the capitalist consumer society, thus offering a critical look at the contemporary world.

MARC HERRERO
"Stoppage Time" is a project in which the artist brings together a series of pieces in a model format together with a series of drawings, to propose a deconstruction of the regulatory structures of the football field, a search for illegitimate scales and places with subjective possibilities. ÁNGEL ZÁRRAGA ARGÜELLES
Ángel Zárraga is considered the “first great painter of soccer,” the one who “saw in the sport an expression of the joy of living.” He was also the first to portray women soccer players. In the painting The Women Soccer Players, he depicted his wife Jeanette Ivanoff along with two of her teammates from the Sportives de Paris club, who became national champions that same year.
